In May 2022, I ordered a new Mando brake caliper for a customer's sedan with a dragging rear brake. I was convinced the piston had seized. The wheel was hard to turn after a short drive, the rotor was hotter than the opposite side, and the parking brake cable was fine. The caliper went on, and the brake kept dragging. I kept second-guessing whether the new caliper could be defective. Then I cracked the bleeder screw at the caliper, fluid spurted out under pressure, and the wheel turned freely. The flexible hose was holding pressure in the system. The caliper was fine—it was simply not the correct part for that failure.
I have been handling brake and suspension parts orders for an independent repair shop since 2017. I have personally made and documented 12 avoidable wrong-part mistakes, totaling roughly $3,400 in wasted budget and return shipping. All of them happened before I stopped trusting the obvious answer. After the May 2022 caliper order, I wrote this checklist, and it has caught 31 potential misdiagnoses in the last 18 months.
Ask a tech how to tell if brake hose or caliper is bad and they will ask how the car behaves. Use this list when one wheel acts like the brake is staying on, the car pulls to one side under braking, a rotor gets far hotter than its opposite side, or one pad is wearing much faster than the others. Those symptoms overlap, which is exactly why the expensive part often gets replaced first.
The 6-Point Checklist Before You Order Brake Parts
You need jack stands, a lug wrench, a line wrench that fits the bleeder screw, a short piece of clear hose, a catch jar, fresh DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid, and brake grease. An infrared thermometer makes the first check easier.
1. Confirm the drag and isolate the wheel
Safely support the vehicle, remove the wheel, and turn the rotor by hand. Compare it with the opposite side. If the rotor is hard to turn, have someone press the brake pedal once and then release it. A rotor that stays tight for a few seconds after the pedal comes up is a real drag condition. Before going further, rule out a rusted parking brake cable or a caliper bracket bolt that has backed out. Both can imitate a seized caliper.
2. Run the bleeder release test
This is the test that would have saved me in 2022, and it is the one most guides skip. An internally collapsed hose acts like a one-way valve. Fluid gets forced through the hose when you press the pedal, but it cannot flow back to the master cylinder when the pedal is released. The brake stays applied even though the caliper itself is fine.
Run it while the symptom is still present, ideally right after a short drive. Put a clear hose over the bleeder screw, run the other end into a jar, and crack the bleeder open about a quarter turn. Keep the engine off. No one should touch the brake pedal during this test.
If fluid spits out as if the system is still pressurized and the rotor immediately turns freely, pressure was trapped in the caliper. That points to the flexible hose, not the caliper piston. If the rotor stays stuck with the bleeder open, the problem is mechanical, usually a seized piston or a stuck slider pin. If both wheels on the same circuit stay stuck, look at the master cylinder and brake pedal adjustment before blaming two separate hoses.
3. Inspect the hose, then do not trust its looks
With the wheel off, check the flexible brake hose. Have a helper press the brake pedal while you watch for a section that balloons outward. Look for cracks, chafing against the bracket, and wet spots around the fittings.
Here is the blind spot: an internally collapsed hose can look perfect from the outside. The inner liner swells or separates and blocks return flow, while the outer cover still looks like new rubber. Visual inspection alone is not a diagnosis. In the U.S., road-vehicle brake hoses are covered by FMVSS 106, and the test methods reference SAE J1401. Those requirements do not make a hose immune to age, heat, and contaminated fluid. If the hose is original and the car has high mileage, replace it on suspicion.
4. Check the caliper slides
If the bleeder test freed the wheel, the problem is hydraulic and you are mostly in hose territory. If the wheel stayed stuck, or if the real symptom is uneven pad wear, check the slider pins before condemning the caliper.
Floating calipers use two steel pins to let the caliper body center itself over the rotor. When one pin seizes, the caliper cannot slide and the inner pad drags. Remove the pins, inspect the rubber boots for tears, and look for rust or dried grease. Cleaning the pins and re-lubricating them with dedicated caliper grease fixes a surprising number of supposed caliper failures. Replace the hardware kit if the boots are damaged.
5. Piston meaning, and the retraction test
Quick definition, because piston gets thrown around loosely. In a disc brake caliper, the piston is the metal cylinder inside the housing. Hydraulic pressure pushes it outward, and it presses the inner brake pad against the rotor. If the piston sticks, the pad stays in contact with the rotor.
To test it, remove the caliper and push the piston back into its bore with a retraction tool or a large C-clamp. Put an old pad between the clamp and the piston so the surface is protected. The piston should move back with steady force. If it will not move, moves crookedly, or leaks past the dust boot, the caliper needs to be replaced.
If it is a rear caliper with an integrated electronic parking brake, do not force the piston back with a C-clamp. Put the parking brake into service mode with a scan tool first, or the adjuster mechanism will be destroyed.
6. Rule out a clunk that is not brake related
Everything above assumes the symptom is drag or pull. If the car clunks when you apply the brakes at low speed, or when you hit a bump while braking, the problem can be suspension, not hydraulics. A worn strut mount is a classic source: the weight shifts forward under braking, and the mount moves with a noticeable knock.
When the diagnosis lands on a strut assembly, a complete unit removes a lot of the guesswork. That prevents two common comebacks: reusing a sagging spring, or bolting a new damper to a tired mount.
Also check the exhaust before you start quoting brake work. A metallic rattle that appears at certain engine speeds or when the car is cold is often a heat shield or a broken hanger. If you do need exhaust parts, an exhaust pipe size chart only helps after you measure the actual pipe outside diameter. A 2.5-inch exhaust means 2.5 inches outer diameter, not inner diameter. Factory exhaust pipes on ordinary passenger cars typically run from about 1.75 to 2.5 inches outer diameter, while trucks and V8 performance cars usually run 2.5 to 3.0 inches. Measure with machinist's calipers, meaning the measuring tool rather than the brake caliper, and order by part number once you know the size. Inlet and outlet configuration matters more than diameter alone.
Reading the Results
Put plainly: one dragging wheel with a bleeder that releases pressure means a bad hose, especially when tested while the symptom is present. Replace the flexible hose, and consider doing both sides while the system is open. A wheel that stays locked even with the bleeder open points to the caliper itself, so check the slides first, then the piston.
When the caliper is the problem, choose the part like a deadline matters, because it does. Rushing to replace a brake part before you know whether it is the hose or the caliper is the most expensive shortcut in this category.
Common Mistakes Worth Avoiding
- Skipping the bleeder test. It costs five minutes, and it is the most reliable way to find a collapsed hose, especially when the hose looks perfectly fine.
- Opening the bleeder while someone is pressing the brake pedal. It sprays pressurized fluid and can pull air into the system when the pedal comes up. Decide whether you are testing or bleeding, and use the correct sequence for each.
- Reusing the banjo crush washers. The washers deform to create the seal, and a reused one is a common cause of a slow leak after a caliper or hose job.
- Topping off with the wrong fluid. DOT 3 and DOT 4 can be mixed in most systems, but DOT 5 silicone fluid should not be used as a top-off. The ratings come from FMVSS 116, and the required fluid type is usually printed on the reservoir cap.
- Forcing an electronic parking brake caliper piston back without a scan tool. This can turn a pad replacement into a much more expensive repair.
