I manage purchasing for a 40-person manufacturing company. Our parts and maintenance budget runs around $180,000 a year, and for the last 6 years I have tracked every invoice in our cost system. When a van showed up with oil on the driveway, I assumed it was a valve cover gasket. The shop called it a timing chain oil leak and quoted $400 to reseal the front cover. That was in early November 2024. By the time the invoice closed, it was $1,800.
This isn't a story about a bad shop. It's a story about how I misread the problem, and why 'how much does a camshaft cost' is a question that only makes sense after you understand what's causing the leak.
Why a Timing Chain Oil Leak Is Never Just a Gasket
The surface problem is simple: a front timing cover seal gets old, the cover warps, oil weeps. But the reason the seal failed in our van wasn't age. It was a clogged PCV valve. Crankcase pressure had built up and pushed oil past every seal it could find.
That matters because if you only reseal the cover, the pressure stays. The leak comes back. And the next time it might come back from the camshaft seal, which sends oil toward the timing belt or exhaust. (Which, honestly, is a recipe for a much worse invoice.)
I'm not a mechanic. I'm the person who pays the mechanics and then asks why. The shop foreman explained it to me twice, and I'm paraphrasing: the leak isn't the problem. The leak is the symptom.
There was also a second cause. A previous repair had replaced only the camshaft seal, not the chain tensioner or guides. The tensioner was weak, the timing chain started slapping, and fine metal particles made their way into the oil. By the time we opened the front cover, the front camshaft journal was scored. Diagnosis first. Confirming a timing chain oil leak usually means cleaning the engine, adding fluorescent dye, and letting it run. That's $130 to $180 before any repair. Then access. On a lot of transverse four-cylinders, reaching the timing cover means moving engine mounts, an alternator, or an AC compressor. That's labor before a single part is replaced.
Then comes the 'while you're in there' decision. Timing chain kits are sold as a set: chain, tensioner, guides, gaskets. If the chain has stretched, you'd be foolish not to replace it while the cover is off. And once the camshaft is exposed, a scored journal is hard to ignore. The $25 gasket becomes a $350 camshaft, a $280 timing chain kit, new oil and coolant, and six hours of labor. The total lands north of $1,500.
The counterintuitive part: the labor to reach the gasket is almost the same as the labor to reach the camshaft. So the real question isn't 'should I replace the camshaft?' It's 'do I want to pay for this teardown twice?' Paying once, while you're in there, is often the cheaper decision over two years.
So How Much Does a Camshaft Cost?
If you landed here after typing that into a search bar, the honest answer is: it depends. Anybody who gives you a single number is guessing.
Based on purchase orders I've tracked, these were the rough part-only prices in Q4 2024 for common Japanese and domestic four-cylinders:
- New aftermarket camshaft: $180–$450
- OEM camshaft: $350–$800
- Performance/upgraded camshaft: $600–$1,200
- Used camshaft from a salvage yard: $75–$200, plus the risk of buying someone else's wear
Don't hold me to those numbers. They move with metal prices, supplier surcharges, and how common your engine is. When I priced a camshaft for a 3.5L V6 in 2023, the part alone was $520. For a 1.6L commuter car, it was $210. That's the range you're dealing with.
And the installed cost is the number that matters. A $220 camshaft can become a $1,200 invoice after the gaskets, timing chain kit, coolant, oil, and labor. If a shop quotes you only the part price, ask for the complete total.
I went back and forth between an OEM camshaft and a quality aftermarket one for a week. OEM was twice the price, but aftermarket warranty support felt thin from my side of the counter. I chose OEM because the labor was identical either way. The part wasn't the risk; the downtime was.
I almost went with a no-name camshaft once because the spreadsheet said it matched OEM specs and saved 40%. My gut said something was off. The machine shop measured it and found the journals out of tolerance. That was a close call. (Surprise, surprise.) That's not a bet I'd want on a boat.
I don't know every product Mando makes, and I wouldn't claim they're right for everything. I respect that they're an automotive supplier with its own stamping and machining background, not a brand that slaps its name on random parts.
A Furrion thermostat is another example. It's designed to talk to a specific RV HVAC system. A generic thermostat can be half the price, but if the wiring and control protocol don't match, you'll stand in a parking lot pressing buttons and getting nowhere. (We did. Not our finest moment.) I'm not 100% sure of the exact protocol, but I know that 'looks compatible' and 'is compatible' are different things.
That said, I don't think any brand should be the answer to everything. A supplier that says 'this isn't our lane, but here's who does it well' earns my trust for the next order. I'd rather work with a specialist who knows their boundaries than a generalist who overpromises. To be fair, some generalists do good work too. But in a procurement world, honesty about limits is rarer than low prices.
What I'd Do Next Time
If a timing chain oil leak shows up on your van or your customer's car, here's the short version:
- Check the cheap stuff first. Test the PCV valve and valve cover breathers before approving any timing cover reseal. A blocked PCV can cause the leak.
- Ask for a complete job quote, not a part quote. 'How much does a camshaft cost?' is the wrong question. 'What's the total cost if I also need the timing chain tensioner and gaskets?' is the right one.
- Buy the complete assembly when it exists. A loaded strut like the Mando MSS050008, or a full timing kit, usually beats buying loose parts and hoping everything fits.
- Work with people who admit what they don't know. The specialist who says 'this is what I do' is a safer bet than the shop that says 'sure, we can handle anything.'
These numbers are what I recorded in Q4 2024. Prices will probably change, so verify current rates before you budget. But the pattern won't change: the cheapest quote isn't the cheapest fix when it ignores the cause.
